B&B Suite

Brera, from the second floor

A suite above the bar, behind the corner balcony almost everyone stops in front of from the street.

There is an hour, early in the morning, when Via Brera is still empty. The shutters are down, the tables outside are still dry, and the neighborhood belongs to whoever is looking down on it. Up here, that hour arrives sooner.

The corner balcony

It is the detail everyone photographs without knowing you can sleep above it. Students from the Accademia draw it, photographers wait for the right light, it ends up on postcards and in the snapshots of people passing through Milan for a single day.

The corner balcony, looking onto Via Brera and Via Fiori Chiari at once.

From here you are on the other side of it. Inside looking out, coffee in hand, while the neighborhood wakes up. It faces two streets at once, Via Brera and Via Fiori Chiari: the only point where you see the whole of Brera without walking through it.

The Pinacoteca is fifty meters away. The Accademia begins on the other side of the street. There is nothing to get to: it is all already under the railing.

The rooms

Inside, the suite does not raise its voice. Pale wallpaper, low arches, wood, a light that cuts in during the day and settles on the walls in the evening.

The living room: sofa, arch, and the corridor to the bedroom.

It is not a hotel room and it does not try to look like one. It is a Brera home: the same proportions, the same ceilings, the same idea of space the buildings around here have had for two centuries. A bedroom, a living room, a real kitchen, a bathroom with a glass shower. All on one floor, all a few steps from the bed.

The bedroom, with the French window onto the balcony.

The bed faces the window, and the window faces the street. That is a choice, not a floor plan: whoever wakes up here should see the neighborhood first and the room second.

Breakfast is one floor down

The suite kitchen: for anyone who would rather stay upstairs.

In the morning you do not need to leave the building. One flight of stairs down and breakfast is at the bar, at the same address, with Brera opening up around you: the deliveries, the first coffees at the counter, the Accademia filling up.

It is the part guests mention most often. Not a hotel with a breakfast room, but the bar downstairs — which for a few days is your downstairs.

An address that is awake

The suite sits above a place that stays open late. That is not a detail to bury at the bottom of the page: it is exactly why you sleep inside Brera rather than next to it.

Anyone looking for the silence of a serviced flat will find it elsewhere. Anyone looking for Milan finds it right below, at eleven at night, with the tables full and the street talking. Then the street empties, the last shutter comes down, and the balcony is still there.
